School Leadership Announcement

Dear Family and Community Members of The Rice School,

HISD Central Division would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Vickie Matson, The Rice School’s Assistant Principal, who has served as Interim Principal over the past several weeks. Dr. Matson has provided steady leadership and support during this transition, ensuring continuity for students, staff, and families. Dr. Matson has accepted a new position in the District to continue her leadership journey in HISD. We are grateful for her 18 years of service and leadership to The Rice School community.  

We are pleased to introduce Mr. Alvaro Montelongo as the new Principal of The Rice School effective Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Mr. Montelongo brings over 20 years of experience in education, most recently serving as an Executive Director of Instruction. He has 10 years of experience as a campus principal, having led Scarborough High School, Berry Elementary, and Looscan Elementary. His leadership experience also includes serving as Assistant Principal and Teacher Specialist at Lewis Elementary.

We are confident that The Rice School will continue to grow with purpose, collaboration, and a relentless focus on student achievement. A meet and greet will be communicated to families in the days to come.
