Meeting Minutes:
Our SDMC meeting began at 4:25 PM, Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Committee members include teachers, parents, community members, business partner, administrators and school-based staff.
School Action Plan – The SDMC was presented information about the School Action Plan for 2025-2026. There are three key action steps to improve the quality of Reading/ELA, Math, and Special Education instruction. Principal Hobbs reviewed the Indicators of Success for each Key Action. The committee was reminded that all teachers reviewed this plan during the August Professional Development training. The professional staff and SDMC approved this plan. The School Action Plan is 15% of the staff’s appraisal. The other areas include Quality Instruction 30%; Student Achievement 35%; and Special Education 20%.
School Safety – Door sweeps of the exterior doors are conducted weekly by our Campus Police Officer. A report is generated and uploaded for safety compliance. The interior classroom doors should be locked and left open according to guidelines given to us by the superintendent and HISD’s Safety Department. The exterior doors should always be locked and remain closed. When doors need to be repaired, report it immediately to Principal Hobbs, or the School Secretary, and Plant Operator. The Raptor Alert app will be utilized for drills in addition to the Campus Emergency Operation Procedures.
Budget – The projection for this school year was 1040 students in accordance with the Office of School Choice guidelines. We currently have 1073 students in Grades K-8. We will continue to enroll students until the snapshot date. Our budget will not be impacted if we meet the 1040 enrollment projection.
Curriculum – The HISD Curriculum and slide decks are being implemented this school year though we are a PUA school. All Rice School Teachers are implementing it with fidelity across grades K-8.
2025 Accountability Rating – The Rice School rating after successfully completing the STAAR 2025 assessment is a “B” and we increased the results to an 83 overall score.
Uniform Policy – The Rice School uniform policy is a polo shirt (red, white, or blue) with the Rice School emblem. These are to be worn with khaki bottoms such as pants, skirts, or shorts. An inquiry was made to add a dark color such as black or blue for the bottoms of the uniform. The SDMC discussed the addition of a darker color, and it was determined this is a safety concern. When students are walking indoors through the hallways or outdoors, they are easily identified by their khaki pants as a Rice School Student. The SDMC wants to keep the established uniform policy in place for the safety of our students.
Meeting Dates – The Texas Education Code requires the SDMC to meet regularly. The HISD School Board policy requires the SDMC to meet quarterly. The Rice School’s SDMC meeting dates will be as follows: October 1, 2025 for Q1; December 3, 2025 for Q2; February 25, 2026 for Q3; and May 20, 2026 for Q4.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
